Crossing into another areaA card journey must start and end inside the ICOCA area. You cannot tap in or out at a station outside it or ride on into a non-IC stretch: buy a ticket for the whole trip. JR Shikoku's Kagawa stations are part of the same area. JR West's Hokuriku lines (Nanao, Johana, Himi) are reached only over other railways and are listed as a separate area here.

Other JR West areas (a journey cannot cross into them on an IC card): ICOCA area: Hokuriku (Nanao, Johana and Himi Lines).
Good to know
- Trips longer than 200 km (operating kilometres) cannot be paid by card. Exceptions: trips within the Osaka suburban area (大阪近郊区間), between it and stops of the Thunderbird, Shirasagi, Kuroshio, Konotori, Kinosaki, Hashidate, Maizuru and Hamakaze limited expresses, between Yakumo stops, and trips onto Hapiline Fukui.
- You can ride on one card between JR West and Hapiline Fukui (beyond Tsuruga); the 200 km limit does not apply to such trips.
- Some rural stretches have IC readers only at some stations: San'in Line Kurayoshi–Hoki-Daisen, Goma–Fukuchiyama–Kinosaki-Onsen, Bantan Line Teramae–Wadayama, Maizuru Line, Hakubi Line Niimi–Hoki-Daisen, Tsuyama Line Hokaiin–Tsuyama and the Yamaguchi Line. You may ride through on a card, but you cannot get on or off at the other stations with it.
- Around Tottori, ICOCA does not work east of Fukube on the San'in Line (towards Hamasaka), on the Inbi Line, the Chizu Express or the Wakasa Railway.
- Planned for spring 2027 (date not fixed): IC gates at every station on the San'in Line Shimohojo–Yodoe, at Tsunoi, Higashi-Koge, Koge and Chizu on the Inbi Line, and on the Chizu Express (Chizu, Ohara, Sayo, Kamigori).
- On the Kinokuni Line between Kii-Tanabe and Shingu most stations have no gate: tap the reader inside the train (blue reader by the front door when boarding, yellow reader by the driver when getting off).
- Small stations often have a simple reader post with no gate (and some lines have readers inside the train). Tap it when you enter and again when you leave, or your card cannot be used next time.
- A plain ICOCA balance does not pay for the Shinkansen: on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Hokuriku Shinkansen only ICOCA FREX commuter passes work as a ticket. Buy a Shinkansen ticket.
