Nankai is in the PiTaPa area. PiTaPa was introduced in July 2006 on all Nankai lines, named as the Nankai Line, the Koya Line and the cable line (鋼索線, the Koyasan cable car). ICOCA and the other nationwide transport IC cards (Kitaca, Suica, PASMO, TOICA, manaca, Hayakaken, nimoca, SUGOCA) can be used in the PiTaPa area under the nationwide mutual-use scheme. Touch the card on the automatic ticket gate. On PiTaPa-area railways such as Nankai, ICOCA must be charged before you ride, is charged the normal fare (no discount fares) and cannot be used to buy tickets or pay a fare adjustment. PASMO notes that a few lines do not take every card. The Nankai pages checked do not name any Nankai section where IC cards cannot be used, but the 2006 announcement is the newest official statement found that covers every line. How fares are handled at unstaffed stations on one-man sections was not confirmed. P
Use an IC card (PiTaPa, ICOCA or another nationwide transport IC card): touch it on the automatic ticket gate when you enter.
Contactless credit/debit/prepaid card, phone or wearable (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay): touch it on the dedicated touch-payment gate when you enter. No registration needed. It works at 97 of Nankai's 105 stations (since 1 December 2025): check Nankai's list of stations first, because you cannot enter or exit with it at the other 8 stations. One card per person; the adult fare is always charged.
Limited express trains such as the Rapi:t need a limited express ticket (特急券) as well as the fare. Nankai sells, for example, the Rapi:t Digital Ticket, a one-way fare with limited express ticket between the issuing station and Kansai Airport.
Some trains are one-man (driver only): on the Takashinohama, Tanagawa and Kada lines, the Wakayamakō Line (2-car trains), the Koya Line between Shiomibashi and Kishinosato-Tamade and between Hashimoto and Gokurakubashi (2-car trains), and, from 22 March 2025, some 4-car local trains on the Nankai Main Line between Izumisano and Wakayamashi. How tickets are checked or fares collected at unstaffed stations on these sections was not confirmed: ask staff or check the notices at the station.
Getting off
IC card: touch the same card on the automatic ticket gate when you exit; the fare is deducted.
Contactless card or phone: touch the same card or device on the dedicated touch-payment gate when you exit; this settles the fare for your trip. The day's fares are added up and charged the next day. You cannot exit with it at a station without touch-payment gates. If you touched in by mistake, tell station staff.
From 1 December 2025 to 31 March 2026 Nankai trialled a daily cap of ¥2,200 for contactless fares (adult only; same card on the same device). Whether it continues after the trial was not confirmed.
Wheelchair assistance
Nankai Call Center (南海電鉄コールセンター), 8:00–21:00. If you need help (e.g. a wheelchair user needing help boarding and alighting), staff at staffed stations can guide you to the platform and help you on and off the train; contacting them in advance makes this smoother, though they may not be able to help at some times, sections or station layouts. Book online with 「南海サポートほっとネット」 (Nankai Support Hot Net) on Nankai's website or the Nankai app from one month before until 18:00 the day before; after that, call the call center, ask at the station counter or use the station intercom.
