Signs and phrases

Terms you will see on trains, trams, buses and at stations, with short phrases for the driver.

整理券
seiriken — numbered ticket

Take one when you board at an unstaffed station or stop. Keep it.

運賃表
unchinhyō — fare display

The board above the driver. Each number on it has an amount.

運賃箱
unchinbako — fare box

The box next to the driver. Put your fare in it when you get off.

ワンマン
wanman — one-man operation

The driver drives and also collects fares. Pay at the fare box or give the 整理券 and fare to the driver.

無人駅
mujin-eki — unstaffed station

No staff member at the window. Use the unstaffed steps.

有人駅
yūjin-eki — staffed station

A staff member can check your ticket at the gate.

券売機
kenbaiki — ticket machine

Buy your ticket here before you board, at stations that have one.

両替
ryōgae — change

Change machine or window. Check whether the line gives change.

交通系ICカード
kōtsūkei IC kādo — transit IC card

Suica, ICOCA, PASMO and similar cards. Many rural lines do not accept them.

乗車券
jōshaken — ticket

A paper ticket for your journey. Hand it in when you get off.
