Crossing into another areaYou cannot ride from the TOICA area to a station outside it (including the Suica area beyond Atami, Kozu or Kofu and the ICOCA area beyond Maibara or Kameyama) on an IC card, except within a commuter pass: buy a ticket for the whole trip before you enter.
Good to know
- Minobu Line: the stations between Kajikazawaguchi and Nishi-Fujinomiya take no IC card, but you may ride through that stretch between the Kofu end and the rest of the area on one card.
- Gero, Takayama and Hida-Furukawa (Takayama Line, outside the area) take TOICA only on these trips: to or from an area station on the Hida limited express, by local train to or from Takayama Line stations Gifu–Mino-Ota, or between these three stations. Otherwise buy a ticket. The stations between Mino-Ota and Gero take no IC card.
- Any other trip from Gero, Takayama or Hida-Furukawa cannot be paid by IC card: buy a ticket for the whole trip.
- At Atami, Kozu, Kofu and Maibara (boundary stations with other IC areas), after a trip inside the TOICA area tap out at the gate marked "TOICA専用" (TOICA only).
- Unstaffed stations and one-man trains: show your card to the driver when you get off, then tap it on the simple IC reader on the station.
- Simple TOICA readers come in pairs: green for entering, yellow for leaving.
- Tokaido Shinkansen is not part of the area: you can ride it with your TOICA only after registering for the EX service (online booking).
- Planned for spring 2027 (not yet in service): TOICA area extended in Mie to the Kisei Line Shimonosho–Taki (incl. Tsu, Matsusaka) and the Sangu Line Tokida–Toba (incl. Iseshi), plus Ise Railway Suzuka; Misedani, Kii-Nagashima, Owase, Kumanoshi and Shingu only with the Nanki limited express.
