Which lines and trains are one-man was not listed on the pages checked (a 2022 release said one-man trains then ran with at most 2 cars, with longer one-man trains being introduced).

IC cards and payment in detail

On conventional lines, TOICA and the other nationwide transport IC cards (the ten cards of the nationwide mutual-use scheme, used wherever the shared IC symbol is shown) work only inside JR Central's TOICA area. Except within a commuter-pass section, you cannot ride out of the TOICA area on an IC card: for a trip that starts inside and ends outside the area (or the reverse), buy a paper ticket for the whole journey beforehand. Check the TOICA area map (toica.jr-central.co.jp/area/) before travelling on rural lines. TOICA itself can also be used inside other IC areas (e.g. Kitaca, PASMO, SUGOCA areas), again only within each area. P

定期券区間内のご利用を除き、エリア外へは乗りこせませんので、エリア内とエリア外をまたがるご乗車の際は、あらかじめ全乗車区間のきっぷをお買い求めください。

Getting on

  1. Inside the TOICA area: touch TOICA (or another nationwide IC card) flat on the gate's card reader until it beeps. Do not put the card into the ticket slot.
  2. If the trip leaves the TOICA area or crosses into another IC area (outside a commuter-pass section), do not enter with the IC card: buy a paper ticket for the whole journey before boarding.
  3. Limited expresses and Home Liner trains in the TOICA area need a separate limited express ticket or seat ticket (乗車整理券) as well.
  4. Touch one card only: keep other IC cards (manaca, Suica etc.) out of the card case, or the gate may not open or may charge the wrong card.

Getting off

  1. Touch the same IC card you entered with on the exit gate. If you pass without touching, the card cannot be used next time.
  2. If the gate beeps and stays closed (balance too low, entry not recorded), read the message on the display and charge or pay the difference.
  3. At Atami, Kōzu, Kōfu and Maibara, after a trip within the TOICA area, exit through a TOICA-only gate.

Getting on

  1. Stations without gates have simple TOICA readers (簡易TOICA改札機): touch the green entry reader before boarding.

Getting off

  1. Getting off a one-man train at a station without staff with an IC card: show your TOICA (or other IC card) to the driver, then touch the yellow exit reader of the simple TOICA gate at the station.
  2. If the exit cannot be recorded (e.g. balance too low) at a station or time without staff, tell the staff at a staffed station on your next trip.
  3. Paying cash on a one-man train (e.g. Iida Line): check the fare from your boarding station on the fare display at the very front of the train and pay it on board; put any boarding certificate (乗車駅証明書) or numbered ticket (整理券) into the fare box. An IC card balance cannot be used to pay fares collected on the train.
Wheelchair assistance

Wheelchair users are asked to contact JR Central in advance (as soon as the trip is decided) so staff can help at stations and with boarding. Conventional lines: JR Central Contact Center, 8:00–21:00, 050-3772-3910, choose "5" in the (Japanese-only) voice guidance. Tokaido Shinkansen: call the departure station's number (7:00–19:00): Tokyo/Shinagawa/Shin-Yokohama/Odawara 0570-08-0028; Atami to Hamamatsu 0570-08-0202; Toyohashi/Mikawa-Anjō/Nagoya/Gifu-Hashima 0570-08-5600; Maibara/Kyoto/Shin-Osaka 0570-08-6011. Every Tokaido Shinkansen train has wheelchair seats; they can also be requested online up to 2 days before travel. Tel. 050-3772-3910
