What you can take on Japanese trains

On JR and most private railways you can take 2 bags free, each up to 250 cm (length + width + height), 2 m long and 30 kg. Small pets in a carrier cost a small fee.

Free carry-on on JR

  • You can take up to 2 pieces of luggage free. Each may be up to 250 cm in length + width + height, up to 2 m long and up to 30 kg. [1]
  • Umbrellas, walking sticks, handbags and similar personal items do not count toward the 2 pieces. [1]
  • Free items include travel bags, suitcases, sports equipment, musical instruments and toys. [1]
  • Sports gear and instruments longer than 2 m are allowed if you can stand them upright in the car, packed in a bag or case. [1]
  • Bicycles go free only if dismantled or folded and packed in a bike bag. [1]
  • Wheelchairs up to 120 cm long and high and 70 cm wide are free. [1]
  • The same limits apply on the Shinkansen. JR Central confirms 2 pieces of up to 30 kg and 250 cm. [2]
  • On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, bags over 160 cm also need a seat with an oversized baggage area (see that guide). [3]

Pets

  • Small dogs, cats and similar small animals must travel in a pet carrier of up to 120 cm (length + width + height). [1]
  • Carrier and animal together may weigh up to 10 kg. [1]
  • The fee on JR is 290 yen per carrier. Show it at the ticket gate and buy a 普通手回り品きっぷ (carry-on ticket). [1]
  • Keep the animal in its carrier in stations and on the train. [4]

Good to know

  • You are responsible for your own luggage. [4]

  • Staff may refuse large items on very crowded trains. [4]

  • Keihan uses the same limits: 2 items free, each up to 250 cm, 2 m long and 30 kg. [5]
  • A pet carrier costs 280 yen per item on Keihan. Buy a 手回り品きっぷ at the ticket machine and show it at the gate. [5]
  • Electric kick scooters must be folded or dismantled and bagged, like bicycles. [5]
