Tokyo Station: lines, transfers, lockers and step-free routes

Which railways stop here

• JR Central (Tokaido Shinkansen) and JR East (Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita, Hokkaido, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen; Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku, Chuo, Tokaido, Ueno-Tokyo, Yokosuka, Sobu and Keiyo lines) share the station. [1]
• Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen (to Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka) leave from platforms 14–19; Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita, Hokkaido, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen from platforms 20–23. [2]
• Sobu and Yokosuka Line trains, including the Narita Airport limited express and rapid trains, use the deep underground platforms 1–4 ("地下総武"). [2]
• The Keiyo Line (for Maihama / Tokyo Disney Resort) has its own underground platforms 1–4 ("地下京葉"), a long walk from the rest of the station. [2]
• Tokyo Metro's Marunouchi Line has its own Tokyo station; Tokyo Metro lists JR Central and JR East as the railways to change to. [3]
• On JR Central's station map the Tokaido Shinkansen gates (Nihombashi, Yaesu North, Yaesu Central North, Yaesu Central South, Yaesu South) are on the Yaesu (east) side; from JR East trains use the Shinkansen Central or South transfer gates. The Marunouchi Line runs underground on the Marunouchi (west) side. [4, map]

Changing trains

• From the Shinkansen allow about 10 minutes to the Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku, Tokaido or Tohoku lines, 15 minutes to the Chuo, Sobu or Yokosuka lines and 20 minutes to the Keiyo Line. [2]
• Tickets booked on JR East's "Eki-net" can be collected at JR East ticket machines and offices, but not at JR Central's ticket offices. [2]

Tickets, rail passes and seat reservations

• JR East ticket office (Midori-no-madoguchi) at the Marunouchi Underground North gate: 5:30–23:00. [5]
• JR EAST Travel Service Center (Tokyo), at the Marunouchi North exit, mainly helps foreign visitors: open daily 8:30–19:00. [6]
• JR Central's ticket offices for the Tokaido Shinkansen: Yaesu Central 5:40–22:45, Yaesu North 8:30–19:00. [1]
• Japan Rail Pass: the JR Central ticket offices at Yaesu Central and Yaesu North also hand out and exchange passes (this list is dated March 2023, so check the hours). [7]

Lockers and luggage

• There are more than 100 coin locker sites in Tokyo Station. [8]
• Tokyo Station Luggage Service Counter, outside the Yaesu South gate, 5:30–23:15: short-term bag storage and "Hakobyun Quick" Shinkansen parcel shipping. [9]
• Inside the gates there is a cloakroom in Gransta Tokyo (B1) and a baggage room in front of the Tohoku/Joetsu/Hokuriku Shinkansen South transfer gate. [9]

Step-free routes and accessible toilets

• Tokyo Station City publishes 1F and B1 maps of routes suited to wheelchairs and people with suitcases when changing lines. [10]
• JR East: handle-type electric wheelchairs can reach every platform from the gates, and change trains on and between platforms. A special waiting room is at the Marunouchi South gate. [11]
• JR Central: its wheelchair-accessible toilet (with baby seat and ostomate facilities) is inside the Tokaido Shinkansen gates; its toilet outside the gates is not wheelchair-accessible. [12]
• Marunouchi Line: elevators link the gate with exit M10 (inside OAZO, 5:10 to the last train) and with an elevator-only entrance on the Marunouchi Building side (first train to 24:00). [13]

• Currency exchange (31 currencies) at the JR EAST Travel Service Center, Marunouchi North exit (1F, outside the gates), 11:00–19:00. [9]
