Large suitcases on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen

Bags over 160 cm (length + width + height) need a seat with an oversized baggage area, booked in advance at no extra cost. Without one you pay a 1,000 yen fee.

Which bags need a booking

  • A bag counts as "oversized" when length + width + height is over 160 cm and no more than 250 cm. [1]
  • Bags up to 160 cm need no booking. Put them on the rack above the seats, at your feet, or in the luggage area on the deck. [1]
  • Bags over 250 cm cannot be taken on the train at all. [1]
  • The rule applies only on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, not on conventional (non-Shinkansen) lines. [2]
  • Strollers, sports equipment, musical instruments and wheelchairs need no booking, whatever their size. Book a seat with an oversized baggage area only if you want to use that space. [1]

The seat with an oversized baggage area

  • These are the last-row seats in some reserved cars. Your bag goes in the space behind the seat, which you share with the others in that row. [1]
  • Non-reserved cars and some reserved cars have no such seats, so you cannot bring an oversized bag into them. [1]
  • The seat costs the same as a normal reserved seat (ordinary or Green Car). There is no surcharge. [1]
  • If you change Shinkansen trains, book a seat with an oversized baggage area on every train. [2]
  • On Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen trains where every car is non-reserved, no booking is needed. [2]
  • These seats go on sale one month ahead at 10:00, like other reserved seats. Some trains fill up, so book early. [2]
  • If they are sold out, take an earlier or later train, or split your luggage into bags of 160 cm or less. [2]
  • On the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen, the "oversized baggage corners" on some decks are open storage without booking for now (a trial). Bags over 160 cm still need a seat with an oversized baggage area. [3]

How to book

  • Online: choose the seat type "seat with an oversized baggage area" in smartEX, Express Reservation, e5489 (JR West) or JR Kyushu Internet Train Reservation. [1]
  • In smartEX: under seat type, pick 特大荷物スペースつき座席, search, then choose a last-row seat on the seat map. [4]
  • At a reserved-seat ticket machine: choose your train, then select the seat with an oversized baggage area and pick a seat on the map. [1]
  • At a ticket office: tell the staff that you are bringing an oversized bag. [1]
  • With a Japan Rail Pass: ask for a seat with an oversized baggage area at a JR ticket office, or book it on "JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation". [5]

If you board without a booking

  • You pay a 1,000 yen carry-on fee and must put the bag where the crew tells you. [2]
  • If the train is full, you may be asked to book another train instead. [5]
