IC cards and payment in detail

PASMO, Suica and the other nationwide transport IC cards (Kitaca, TOICA, manaca, ICOCA, PiTaPa, Hayakaken, nimoca, SUGOCA) can be used on all Toei rail lines: the four subway lines, the Tokyo Sakura Tram and the Nippori-Toneri Liner. This comes from the PASMO operator list and Toei's published tram IC card rules; Toei's own website could not be retrieved, and PASMO notes that a few lines in its area do not take every card. On the tram the IC fare applies only when the whole fare is paid from one card. Contactless credit/debit cards and phones (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay) work at the gates of every subway station since 23 December 2025, at the adult fare only (some gates: use the staffed window). The announcements cover the subway only, not the tram or the Liner. P

How to ride P

Getting on

  1. Subway lines (Asakusa, Mita, Shinjuku, Ōedo): buy a ticket at the ticket machine (券売機), or use an IC card such as PASMO or Suica, or a contactless credit/debit card or phone.
  2. Enter through the automatic ticket gate (自動改札機). IC card: touch it on the gate reader. Contactless card or phone: touch it on the separate touch-payment reader fitted to the gate. At a few gates contactless cards are handled at the staffed window instead.
  3. The Tokyo Sakura Tram and the Nippori-Toneri Liner work differently: see those lines' pages.

Getting off

  1. Subway lines: leave through the automatic ticket gate, touching the same IC card you entered with.
  2. Contactless credit/debit card or phone: you must touch the same card or device to exit. You are charged the adult fare (no child fares). Since 25 March 2026 one touch-in/touch-out also covers trips continuing onto Tokyo Metro, Keikyu, Keio, Tokyu, Odakyu, Sotetsu, Seibu, Tobu and Minatomirai lines (some of their stations excluded), with ¥70 off when changing between Tokyo Metro and Toei. Riding on to any other company's line (for example Keisei) is not possible with a contactless card: use an IC card instead.
  3. Out-of-gate transfers with a contactless card: if you take more than 60 minutes to change, a new fare starts at the transfer station.
