IC cards and payment in detail
All 16 stations (including JR Ito) take Suica and the cards that work with it (PASMO, Kitaca, TOICA, ICOCA, SUGOCA, nimoca, Hayakaken, manaca, PiTaPa). Touch the simple IC reader by the ticket gate when you enter and leave. The Izukyu Line belongs to the Tokyo-area Suica/PASMO zone: you can ride on one card from Izukyu stations as far as the Tokyo area, but not across into another IC area (for example onto the Tokaido Shinkansen via Atami): buy a ticket for such trips. IC cards cannot be used at Izukyu ticket machines or windows, Izukyu no longer sells Suica cards, and refunds are only at the card issuer. Top up at the simple charge machines inside the gates at Minami-Ito, Kawana, Izu-Kogen, Izu-Atagawa, Izu-Inatori, Kawazu and Izukyu-Shimoda (¥1,000 steps, not when the station is unstaffed). Limited express trains need a separate limited express ticket. Contactless credit card touch at the gates is not mentioned on Izukyu's pages; credit cards can be used to buy tickets at the windows. P
Buy a ticket at the ticket machine or window (credit cards are accepted at the windows for tickets and limited express tickets), or touch your IC card on the simple reader by the gate.
With an IC card and a limited express ticket: touch the card on the reader and show the limited express ticket to the gate staff (if nobody is there, just go in).
Getting off
Touch your IC card on the simple reader by the gate, or hand in your ticket.
Give your limited express ticket to the gate staff (if nobody is there, put it in the ticket box).
Getting on
Several stations are unstaffed all day (Futo, Izu-Okawa, Izu-Hokkawa, Katase-Shirata, Imaihama-Kaigan, Inazusa, Rendaiji) and others in the early morning and evening.
With an IC card: touch it on the simple reader by the entrance.
Without an IC card: take a boarding-station certificate (乗車駅証明書) at the gate. Buy your ticket on the train from the conductor, or pay at your destination station. On one-man trains the driver does not sell tickets.
Getting off
With an IC card: the conductor checks your card's entry record and balance when you get off. If the balance covers the fare, touch the simple reader at the station to exit.
If the balance is too low, you pay the whole fare from your boarding station in cash and get a slip; have the card's exit processed at a station later. If no conductor is on the train, report it at a staffed station later.
Without an IC card: pay the fare (show your boarding-station certificate) to the conductor or at a staffed station.
Wheelchair assistance
Staff help wheelchair users and blind or partially sighted passengers on and off. Please call at least 2 days before you travel, because staff must be sent to unstaffed stations and stations without lifts: Izu-Kogen Station (0557-53-1124) for Minami-Ito to Izu-Atagawa, Izukyu-Shimoda Station (0558-22-3202) for Katase-Shirata to Izukyu-Shimoda. Only Izukyu-Shimoda is step-free from platform to gate; Jogasaki-Kaigan has a ramp and Izu-Kogen, Izu-Atagawa and Kawazu have lifts; other stations have stairs only. Tel. 0557-53-1124
