IC cards and payment in detail

All ten nationwide transport IC cards (PiTaPa, ICOCA, Kitaca, PASMO, Suica, manaca, TOICA, Hayakaken, nimoca, SUGOCA) work on the Kyoto city subway and city buses, as does KANSAI ONE PASS (sold only to short-stay foreign visitors at the City Bus & Subway Information Centers at Kyoto Station and Kotochika Kyoto). Charge the card beforehand (PiTaPa excepted); it can be charged at subway stations. One card per person: you cannot use two IC cards, combine an IC card with another ticket, or get special discount fares with it. Credit cards and bank cards cannot be used to ride the subway, and the Japan Rail Pass is not valid. P

Getting on

  1. Get a ticket before you ride: tickets are not sold inside the gates or on the train. Credit cards and the Japan Rail Pass cannot be used.
  2. Paper ticket: buy it at the ticket machine near the gate (fares are shown on the board above). It is valid only on the day of purchase and only from the station where you bought it. Put it through the gate and take it back.
  3. IC card: touch the reader while it glows blue, for about a second until it beeps. If the balance is under ¥10 (any card except PiTaPa), charge it first at a ticket machine marked ICチャージ.
  4. Doors open and close automatically. At Kyoto, Shijō and Karasuma Oike (Karasuma Line) and at every Tōzai Line station there are platform doors too.

Getting off

  1. Paper ticket: put it into the gate; it is collected. If you rode past the section you paid for, pay the difference at the fare adjustment machine (のりこし精算機) and exit with the adjustment ticket. A ticket for a higher fare is not refunded.
  2. IC card: touch the same card you entered with. If the balance is short (any card except PiTaPa), charge it at a fare adjustment machine marked ICチャージ, then touch again.
  3. You cannot use two IC cards at once or combine an IC card with another ticket.
  4. Keep the IC card away from other IC cards, coins and metal objects when touching the reader. If the card cannot be read, pay another way (for example cash).
