IC cards and payment in detail

The subway's own IC card is Hayakaken. The Fukuoka City Subway is the Hayakaken area of the nationwide IC card scheme, and the Bureau's how-to-ride page confirms that the other nationwide transport IC cards (SUGOCA, nimoca, ICOCA, Kitaca, PASMO, Suica, manaca, TOICA, PiTaPa) also work and can be charged. You cannot combine an IC card with another ticket or a second IC card at the gate. Contactless credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay; also debit, prepaid, phones and wearables) work at all 36 stations on all three lines: touch the dedicated reader on the gate; no registration needed. Touch payment is capped at ¥640 a day (¥12,570 a month) per card and device; it cannot be used for through trips onto the JR Chikuhi Line. P

Getting on

  1. Paper ticket: buy it at the ticket machine (press the language button for English; ¥1 and ¥5 coins are not accepted). For through trips onto the JR Chikuhi Line or Nishitetsu Kaizuka Line, press the other-company button first.
  2. At the gate, put the ticket in and take it back as you pass. IC card: touch the reader firmly until the gate opens.
  3. Contactless credit/debit card or phone: touch the dedicated reader on the gate until the green light comes on. Child or disability fares on a credit card: ask at the station window before entering, every time.
  4. Between Meinohama and Tenjin, trains to Fukuoka Airport and to Kaizuka stop at the same platform: check the destination.

Getting off

  1. Leave through the gate with the same ticket or card you entered with.
  2. If your IC card balance is short at the exit, charge it or pay the shortfall at a fare adjustment machine with the Hayakaken mark, then exit. Nationwide IC cards can be charged there too.
  3. Contactless credit/debit card: touch the exit reader; no need to tell staff even if you entered at a child or disability fare.
