IC cards such as Suica or SUGOCA cannot be used, and fares from other operators' stations cannot be settled on board. If you entered a JR station with an IC card and ride a through train to Higo-Ōzu, settle the IC card at Higo-Ōzu first. You can pay the fare on board with a contactless credit card (touch payment). Getting on

  1. Local trains: at Tateno and Takamori buy a ticket from the ticket machine. At other stations just board; you pay on the train.
  2. Torokko (open-car tourist train): reserve online 30 to 3 days ahead or buy a same-day ticket at the departure station (Takamori window from 9:00; Tateno ticket booth only shortly before departures). All seats are reserved.

Getting off

  1. Pay the fare into the fare box when you get off, or touch a contactless credit card.
  2. Fares (from 1 Oct 2026) are ¥190–¥550 for adults; children half.
