IC cards and payment in detail
PiTaPa and the nationwide transport IC cards (ICOCA, Kitaca, PASMO, Suica, manaca, TOICA, Hayakaken, nimoca, SUGOCA), including their mobile versions, work on the subway (and city buses). Touch the IC reader on the ticket gate when you enter and leave. Cards other than PiTaPa (post-pay) must be charged before you ride; you can charge them at the station ticket machines. ICOCA (¥2,000 including ¥500 deposit) is sold at the automatic commuter-pass machines in subway stations, cash only. P

- Paper ticket: buy it at the ticket machine (every station has them; press the English button). Find the fare to your station on the chart above the machines; for a child ticket press the child button first.
- Insert the ticket into the gate and take it back at the other end.
- IC card: tap it firmly on the IC reader of the gate. Contactless credit/debit/prepaid card (Visa, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay) or phone: tap it on the separate contactless reader.
- The old magnetic one-day tickets could be used only until 30 Sep 2026; tickets with no expiry date (or one from 1 Oct 2026 on) can be refunded free at subway stations (until 30 Sep 2027) and at pass offices. A QR one-day ticket sold online was announced to replace them (see passes).
Getting off
- Insert your ticket into the exit gate (it may come back out if it is a pass), or tap the same IC card or contactless card you entered with.
