IC cards and payment in detail

The fare page says nationwide transport IC cards can be used; it does not list the card names or say how to touch on and off on board. Commuter passes are cash only (no credit cards). P

※全国交通系ICカードをご利用いただけます。

Getting on

  1. Board by the rear door (rear in the direction of travel).
  2. Take a numbered ticket (整理券) from the machine by the door; it proves where you boarded, so keep it until you get off (lose it and you may be charged the fare from the start of the line). No numbered ticket is issued at the terminals Hojomachi and Ao: just board.
  3. At Hojomachi you can buy a ticket at the ticket machine instead.

Getting off

  1. Get off at the front, by the driver: put the fare (cash, with your numbered ticket) or your ticket into the fare box next to the driver. Check the fare on the display first.
  2. Change your money before your stop (the change machine is on board); for ¥2,000 notes or larger ask the driver.
  3. Disability discount: show your handbook to the driver when paying.
Wheelchair assistance

Staff help wheelchair users get on and off, but trains are one-man operated, so extra staff may need to be arranged: contact Hojo Railway in advance, especially when travelling alone. Help may not be possible on early-morning and late-night trains when no staff are on duty.
