Ordinary trains before and after the Shinkansen are paid on the card inside: Suica area: Greater Tokyo, Suica area: Sendai (Miyagi, Fukushima, Yamagata), Suica area: Niigata, Suica area: Aomori, Suica area: Morioka, Suica area: Akita.

Conditions

• Non-reserved seats only. On Morioka – Shin-Aomori, Morioka – Akita and Fukushima – Shinjo, where every train is all-reserved, you may use a free reserved seat for trips within that stretch.
• Only between Shinkansen stations of the listed stretches; some trips are excluded.
• Not across Morioka (Tokyo side ⇔ Shin-Aomori or Akita).
• Not across Fukushima between the Tokyo side and the Yamagata Shinkansen (e.g. Tokyo – Yonezawa).
• Not when changing at Omiya between the Shin-Aomori and Takasaki directions (e.g. Sendai – Niigata).
• Not when changing at Takasaki between the Niigata and Joetsu-Myoko directions.
• Not when changing at Echigo-Yuzawa between Niigata and Gala-Yuzawa.
• Ordinary cards need a free one-time registration first (ticket machine at a JR East station, or in the Mobile Suica app); then you just tap the Shinkansen gate.
• Welcome Suica Mobile needs no registration: it works from the day you issue it.
• One-way trips on the day only.
• Combined with ordinary trains it can cost more than buying tickets.
• If your final station is outside the Suica areas, buy a ticket for the ordinary-train part inside the Shinkansen gates at the station where you get off the Shinkansen.
