Crossing into another areaYou cannot ride on an IC card from this area into another Suica area (Tokyo, Sendai, Niigata, Aomori, Morioka, Akita) or to a station outside the areas: buy a paper ticket for the whole trip. Exception: Shinkansen trips with Touch de Go Shinkansen or a Shinkansen e-ticket, which the card pays across areas.
By Shinkansen into other areasWith Touch de Go! Shinkansen the card also pays Shinkansen trips (non-reserved seats) from this area into other areas, with ordinary trains at both ends. See the conditions.
Other JR East areas (a journey cannot cross into them on an IC card): Suica area: Akita, Suica area: Aomori, Suica area: Greater Tokyo, Suica area: Morioka, Suica area: Sendai (Miyagi, Fukushima, Yamagata).
Good to know
- JR East plans to merge its six Suica areas into one at the end of fiscal 2026 (by March 2027); the start date has not been announced yet. Until then the areas stay separate.
- Stations shown on the map as "Suica partly available" (一部対応駅) still take a Suica (or other IC card) balance for the ride; they only do not sell or refund cards or Suica commuter passes.
- Shinkansen: with "Touch de Go! Shinkansen" (register your IC card once) you can ride non-reserved Shinkansen seats between Shinkansen stations on the card balance. Shinkansen are not part of this file.
- Small stations often have a simple Suica reader instead of a gate (one reader, or separate "入場" entry and "出場" exit readers). Tap it when you enter and again when you leave.
