Manners on trains and platforms

Put your phone on silent and don't make calls in the car. Give priority seats to those who need them. Line up on the platform, move inside the car, wear your backpack in front and keep big bags out of the way. Some lines have women-only cars, mostly in the weekday morning rush.

Phones

  • Set your phone to silent mode (マナーモード) and do not talk on the phone in the car. [1]
  • Near the priority seats, switch your phone off when the car is crowded (when passengers are touching each other). [1]

Priority seats

  • Every Tokyo Metro car has priority seats (優先席). Give them up for older people, people with disabilities or internal conditions, people with small children and pregnant women. [1]

On the platform and when boarding

  • Line up in an orderly queue while you wait for the train. [2]
  • Once on board, don't stop by the door: move further into the car. [2]
  • On escalators, hold the handrail and stand still rather than walking. [1]

Bags

  • Wear your backpack on your front inside the car. [2]
  • Bags too big for the overhead rack go in a luggage area or somewhere they don't block other passengers. [3]

Talking, eating and rubbish

  • Keep conversations quiet, and if you eat or drink, think of the people around you. [2]
  • Take any rubbish from the train home with you. [1]

Women-only cars (女性専用車)

  • Women-only cars are also open to children of primary-school age and younger, and to people with disabilities and their carers. Look for the sticker on the platform and the car windows. [4]
  • Tokyo area, JR East: women-only cars run on weekday mornings on these lines (the Saikyo line also late at night). Example: Saikyo line toward Osaki, trains leaving Shinjuku 7:30–9:40, car 10. [5]
  • Osaka Metro: on the Midosuji line, car 6 is women-only all day on weekdays. [6]
  • On the Tanimachi line it is car 3, from the first train until 9:00 on weekdays. [6]
  • JR West: on Osaka-area commuter lines (Osaka Loop, JR Kyoto, JR Kobe, JR Takarazuka, Gakkentoshi, Hanwa, Yamatoji and others) the women-only car runs every day, from the first train to the last. [7]
