Booking seats on JR West: e5489 and JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION

JR West sells reserved seats from 10:00 one month before travel. Book online on e5489 (Japanese) or JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION (English), then collect paper tickets at a ticket machine with the 5489 logo, or ride ticketless where offered.

e5489 (Japanese)

  • e5489 books the Sanyo, Kyushu, Nishi-Kyushu and Hokuriku Shinkansen and main limited expresses; WESTER members log in, others can book without registering. [1]
  • Bookings open at 10:00 one month before the travel day and close 6 minutes before departure (4 minutes for Hokuriku Shinkansen e-tickets, 2 minutes for ticketless limited expresses). [2]
  • One booking covers up to 6 people (adults and children). [2]
  • Members can send an advance request from 05:30 one week before sales open; the actual booking is made from 10:00 one month ahead and is not guaranteed. [2]
  • Pay by credit card, at the station, or at a convenience store or bank. [2]
  • Some trains cannot be booked on e5489, e.g. trains needing a liner ticket, or trains sold only at certain ticket offices; buy those at the station. [2]

Collecting tickets

  • Collect e5489 tickets at JR West or JR Shikoku ticket machines and ticket offices showing the e5489 mark, JR Kyushu reserved-seat ticket machines (outside the gates) and ticket offices, and some JR Central and JR East machines. [3]
  • In JR East territory, pickup is only at Hokuriku Shinkansen stations, main Tokyo stations, Yokohama, Atami and the Narita and Haneda airport stations. [3]
  • Always collect your tickets before boarding: without them you must buy full-price tickets again on the train. [3]
  • Cards without a physical card (virtual or one-time debit cards) cannot be used to collect tickets. [3]
  • With the ticketless service you show the booking on your phone instead of collecting a ticket; you still need a fare ticket or an IC card such as ICOCA. [4]

  • The English booking site opens at 10:00 JST one month before the travel day and closes 6 minutes before departure. [5]
  • It is open 05:30 to 01:50 JST. [5]
  • Bookings with reserved seats must be paid by card when you book. [6]
  • Collect the tickets at a JR West, JR Shikoku, JR Kyushu or JR Central station, or at some JR East Travel Service Centers. [7]
