Step-free accessStation list → PUse the elevators between street, ticket gates and platforms. There is a step and gap at the train door, so staff bring a boarding plate: ask at the station office before you go through the gates. Trains have wheelchair spaces; board at any car.
IC cards and payment in detail

The local card SAPICA and the nationwide cards Kitaca, Suica, PASMO, manaca, TOICA, PiTaPa, ICOCA, Hayakaken, nimoca and SUGOCA work on the subway. Touch the card on the gate reader. One-day tickets cannot be bought with IC card balance. P

札幌市営交通[地下鉄・市電(路面電車)]、ジェイ・アール北海道バス、じょうてつ、北海道中央バスで乗車券として利用できるICカードは、SAPICAのほか、「Kitaca」、「Suica(各種地域連携ICカードを含む)」、「PASMO」、「manaca(マナカ)」、「TOICA」、「PiTaPa」、「ICOCA」、「はやかけん」、「nimoca」、「SUGOCA」です。

Getting on

  1. Buy a ticket at the ticket machine (choose the fare for your journey), or use an IC card such as SAPICA, Kitaca or Suica.
  2. Paper ticket: put it in the automatic gate and take it back; you need it at your destination. IC card: touch it on the gate reader.
  3. Contactless credit/debit card or phone (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay): touch it on the separate reader at the front of a gate marked with a sticker and a blue floor sheet, until the light turns from blue to green. Works at all 49 stations; no registration needed; one card per person.

Getting off

  1. Paper ticket: put it in the gate at your destination. IC card: touch it on the reader.
  2. If your IC card balance is too low, charge it at the fare adjustment machine before the gate.
  3. Contactless card: touch the same card or device you entered with. The fare is shown on the gate screen. Only adult fares apply (no child fare, welfare or transfer discounts); daily charges are capped at the one-day ticket price (¥830 weekdays, ¥520 weekends, holidays and 29 Dec–3 Jan).
