IC cards and payment in detail
The local card manaca and the nine other nationwide transport IC cards (TOICA, Kitaca, PASMO, Suica, PiTaPa, ICOCA, Hayakaken, nimoca, SUGOCA) work at the subway gates. Cards from other areas cannot be bought, refunded or reissued in Nagoya, and they do not earn manaca mileage points or the bus-subway transfer discount. Contactless credit/debit cards and phones (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay) work at every subway station since 3 September 2026, adult fare only; a few gates are not yet converted (use the staffed window there). P
Check the fare to your stop on the fare chart above the ticket machines, and buy a ticket (or a one-day ticket) at the machine. Or use an IC card (manaca or another nationwide card), or a contactless credit/debit card or phone.
Enter through an automatic gate showing an arrow. Paper ticket: put it in the slot and take it back. IC card: touch it firmly on the blue reader. Do not touch with other IC-chip cards in the same wallet: the gate cannot read it.
Contactless credit/debit card or phone: hold it on the separate touch-payment reader in front of the gate until the lights turn from blue to green. No registration is needed. Where a gate has no reader, tell the staff at the gate window.
Getting off
Leave through the automatic gate. Single tickets are kept by the gate; one-day tickets and Donichi Eco tickets come back out, so take them.
If you rode past the stop you paid for, pay the difference at the fare adjustment machine near the gate and go through the gate with the adjustment ticket.
Contactless credit/debit card or phone: touch the same card or device you entered with (a phone set up with the same card does not count). You pay the adult fare only: no child fare, disability discount or transfer discount, and one card covers one person.
Contactless cards can be used on through trains into Meitetsu only to and from Meitetsu's 13 touch-payment stations; for other Meitetsu stations use an IC card or a paper ticket.
