IC cards and payment in detail

IC cards (Suica etc.) cannot be used on the Kamikōchi Line: pay cash or buy a ticket. At Matsumoto you can buy a Kamikōchi Line ticket at the ticket machines with cash or an IC card. If you came in through the JR gates with an IC card, leave the gates with the IC card and buy a Kamikōchi Line ticket at the machine. If you entered with an IC card anyway, pay the Kamikōchi Line fare in cash and finish the IC card processing at a station where IC cards work (you get a slip). Credit cards are accepted only at the Shin-Shimashima ticket window (not for commuter passes or ride sets). P

Getting on

  1. At Matsumoto (3rd-floor machines, two machines nearest the JR ticket office), Hata and Shin-Shimashima buy a ticket at the ticket machine; the Kamikōchi Line leaves from platform 7 at Matsumoto.
  2. At other staffed stations during staffed hours (Kitanii-Matsumotodaigakumae, Niimura, Moriguchi; Shimonii is currently closed) buy your ticket at the window.
  3. At Matsumoto, Hata, Shin-Shimashima and Kitanii-Matsumotodaigakumae (staffed hours) all doors open: board by any door. At other staffed stations board by the middle door of each car.

Getting off

  1. At Matsumoto, Hata, Shin-Shimashima and Kitanii-Matsumotodaigakumae (staffed hours) all doors open: get off by the nearest door and hand your ticket or the fare to the station staff.
  2. Arriving at Matsumoto without a ticket: pay at the fare box at the very front of the train and take a 精算済券 (fare-paid slip) from the driver, then hand it in at the staffed gate. To continue on JR, buy a JR ticket at the machines outside the gates.

Getting on

  1. 7 of the 14 stations are unstaffed, and staffed stations are unstaffed at some times. There, board by the middle door of each car (wait near the 乗車口 mark on the platform).
  2. Take a numbered ticket (整理券) from the machine at the door, unless you already have a ticket, ride set or pass. Do not take one at other stations.

Getting off

  1. At unstaffed stations, at Shimonii, Niimura and Moriguchi, and at Kitanii-Matsumotodaigakumae outside staffed hours, get off by the door at the very front of the train.
  2. Put your ticket, or your numbered ticket and the fare in cash, into the fare box at the front. On board only ¥1,000 notes can be changed (no other banknotes).
Wheelchair assistance

Wheelchairs up to 120 cm long and high and 70 cm wide (including handle-type electric wheelchairs) can ride when used by the passenger themself; tell the driver when boarding. Some stations are hard to use: ask Shin-Shimashima Station, 0263-87-3166 (6:00–19:00). Tel. 0263-87-3166
