IC cards and payment in detail

PASMO, Suica (including mobile) and the other nationwide transport IC cards (Kitaca, TOICA, manaca, PiTaPa, ICOCA, Hayakaken, nimoca, SUGOCA) can be used on every Tobu line; every station has an IC-capable automatic or simple gate. Use the same card to enter and exit. IC cards cannot be used for trips that continue beyond the PASMO/Suica Tokyo area onto the Yagan Railway, Aizu Railway, Watarase Keikoku Railway, Jomo Electric Railway and similar lines: buy a paper ticket for those. Contactless credit/debit cards and phones (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay) work only at 77 of Tobu's 205 stations (Asakusa, Tokyo Skytree, Oshiage to Minami-Kurihashi/Kuki, Tochigi, Shin-Kanuma, Shimo-Imaichi, Tobu-Nikko, Shin-Takatoku, Tobu World Square, Kinugawa-Onsen, Tatebayashi, Ashikagashi, Ota, and Ikebukuro to Ogawamachi on the Tojo Line), at one gate lane per station, adult fare only, and both the entry and the exit station must be on the list. Getting on

  1. Buy a ticket at the ticket machine (自動券売機), or use an IC card such as PASMO or Suica: every Tobu station has an automatic gate or a simple IC card reader gate.
  2. IC card: touch it on the gate reader when you enter. Use the same card again when you leave; otherwise the paper-ticket fare applies.
  3. Going on to the Yagan, Aizu, Watarase Keikoku or Jomo lines: IC cards cannot be used across the boundary, so buy a paper ticket in advance.
  4. Contactless credit/debit card or phone: only at the 77 listed stations, on the gate lane with the touch-payment reader (one lane per station; at Shin-Takatoku and Tobu World Square the terminal is near the window). Both your entry and exit stations must be on the list. Not usable on JR through limited express trains.

Getting off

  1. Leave through the automatic ticket gate, touching the same IC card you entered with, or inserting your ticket.
  2. Contactless credit/debit card or phone: touch the same card or device you entered with. You pay the adult fare (no child or disability discounts); the card holder only, one person per card. Through trips onto Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Keikyu, Keio, Tokyu, Odakyu, Sotetsu, Seibu and Minatomirai lines are covered (their own station limits apply); continuing onto JR or other non-participating lines is not possible.
  3. If you entered by contactless card and get off at a non-listed station, staff check your route and you pay the fare from your boarding station in cash or by IC card; the card entry record is cancelled later at a listed station.
Wheelchair assistance

Tobu Railway Customer Center (東武鉄道お客さまセンター), 9:00–18:00 every day except the New Year holidays; follow the voice guidance (option 3 for times, fares and other enquiries). Users of handle-type electric wheelchairs must apply in advance and allow extra time at the station; passengers who cannot use the toilet or move in the train alone need a companion. A dedicated wheelchair-assistance line was not found on the pages checked. Tel. 03-5962-0102
