IC cards and payment in detail

Since 14 March 2026 Suica works at every station on both lines (Shinano Railway Line Karuizawa–Shinonoi and Kita-Shinano Line Nagano–Myōkō-Kōgen), as do the other nationwide IC cards (Kitaca, PASMO, TOICA, manaca, ICOCA, PiTaPa, SUGOCA, nimoca, Hayakaken), Mobile Suica and the Nagano-area KURURU card. Karuizawa and Ueda have Suica ticket gates; the other stations have stand-alone IC readers. IC fares are slightly cheaper than paper tickets (charged to the yen). The stations are part of JR East's Greater Tokyo Suica area: you cannot ride with Suica from Shinano Railway into another Suica area (e.g. Niigata) or onto the JR Koumi and Iiyama lines outside the area; buy a ticket for the whole trip instead. Top up with cash at the new ticket machines; Suica cards are sold at Karuizawa, Komoro, Ueda, Yashiro, Nagano (Shinano Railway ticket office) and Toyono. P

Getting on

  1. With Suica or another nationwide IC card (or KURURU): touch the reader before you go to the platform. Karuizawa and Ueda have IC ticket gates; other stations have stand-alone IC readers.
  2. Changing at Komoro between Shinano Railway and the JR Koumi Line: touch the stand-alone IC reader on the transfer footbridge.
  3. Without an IC card: buy a ticket at the ticket machine (or at the ticket window at Karuizawa, Komoro, Ueda, Yashiro, Nagano or Toyono). Shinano-Oiwake, Hirahara and Furuma have no ticket machine. Ticket windows and machines do not take credit cards.
  4. Going beyond the Suica area (e.g. onto the JR Koumi or Iiyama lines): buy a paper ticket for the whole trip before you ride.

Getting off

  1. With an IC card: touch the gate or the stand-alone IC reader at your destination; the fare is deducted automatically.
  2. With a digital discount ticket (free pass): show the ticket's in-use screen to the station staff.
