IC cards and payment in detail

All ten nationwide transport IC cards work, plus the tram's own Denden nimoca and the local Kumamon IC card. Touch the IC card reader at the fare box when you get off. Contactless credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay) and QR-code payment (PayPay and other apps) are also accepted. Adult fare is flat ¥200, child ¥100. To travel between the Kami-Kumamoto side and the Tasakibashi side you change trams at Karashimachō (within 20 minutes). P

Getting on

  1. Board through the middle or rear door. On the ultra-low-floor trams you may board through the front or rear door.
  2. Do not pay when boarding: you pay when you get off. IC card and credit card users do not touch when boarding (except when changing trams at Karashimachō with an IC card: touch the reader when you board the second tram).

Getting off

  1. Pay at the fare box when you get off.
  2. Cash: put in the exact fare; no change is given. The machine changes ¥1,000 notes only (no ¥10,000, ¥5,000 or ¥2,000 notes); change money only while the tram is stopped.
  3. IC card: touch the IC card reader. Credit/debit card or phone: touch the separate contactless (タッチ決済) reader.
  4. Child fare, discount fare or paying for several people: tell the crew before you touch.
  5. QR-code payment: tell the crew first, then hold the QR code to the camera of the reader.
  6. Changing between lines at Karashimachō with cash, credit card or QR code: take a transfer ticket from the driver when you get off the first tram, and change within 20 minutes. The transfer discount is not applied automatically for credit card or QR payment: tell the crew before getting off.
