IC cards and payment in detail

Nationwide transport IC cards (ICOCA, Suica, Mobile ICOCA etc.) work on all suburban railway and city tram lines. Paying by IC card or the Mican app is ¥20 cheaper for adults (¥10 for children) than cash, e.g. a city tram ride of ¥250 costs ¥230; the discount does not apply on the Botchan Ressha steam-style train. Iyotetsu sells ICOCA cards; its former local card, IC i-Card, has been discontinued. Suburban railway: touch the entry reader at the station gate and the exit reader when you leave. City tram: no touch when boarding; touch the reader at the exit door when you get off. One card pays for one person only, and you cannot combine an IC card with cash. P

Getting on

  1. Suburban railway (郊外電車): buy a QR-code ticket from the ticket machine before boarding; it is valid only for the section and date printed on it.
  2. Suburban railway: hold the ticket's QR code over the reader at the gate (it sits above the IC card reader). With an IC card, touch the gate's entry reader instead.
  3. City tram (市内電車): just board; you pay when you get off. IC card users do not touch when boarding.

Getting off

  1. Suburban railway: at your destination hold the QR code over the reader at the exit, then drop the ticket in the ticket collection box (きっぷ回収箱) near the exit. At Matsuyama-shi Station, hand the ticket to the staff after scanning it. With an IC card, touch the exit reader.
  2. City tram: press the stop button before your stop and stay seated until the tram has stopped.
  3. City tram, cash: put the fare into the fare box when you get off (flat fare adult ¥250, child ¥130; ¥230 / ¥120 cashless). No change is given: use the change machine on the fare box first. It works at the front and rear and does not take ¥10,000 or ¥5,000 notes.
  4. City tram, IC card: touch the reader at the exit door. One card pays for one person only.
