IC cards and payment in detail

The local ICAS nimoca and the nationwide transport IC cards work on the trams. Touch the reader at the entrance when you board (no numbered ticket) and the reader on the fare box when you get off, about one second each time. Changing trams (e.g. at Jūjigai between the Hakodate-dokku-mae and Yachigashira routes) is handled automatically on the card: one card per person. The transfer discount to Hakodate Bus (up to ¥160, within 60 minutes) applies only to ICAS nimoca and nimoca, not to other nationwide cards. ICAS nimoca is also sold on board. P

Getting on

  1. Board through the door in the middle of the tram. The fare is paid when you get off.
  2. Cash: take a numbered ticket (整理券 seiriken) from the machine at the entrance.
  3. IC card: do not take a numbered ticket; touch the boarding reader instead.

Getting off

  1. When your destination is announced, press the stop button (降車合図ボタン).
  2. Fares depend on distance (adult ¥210 up to 2 km, ¥230 up to 4 km, ¥250 up to 7 km, ¥260 beyond; children half). Find your numbered ticket's number on the fare display: the amount under it is your fare.
  3. Cash: put the numbered ticket into the fare box first, then the cash. No change is given: use the changer beside the driver's seat while the tram is stopped (¥2,000, ¥5,000 and ¥10,000 notes cannot be changed).
  4. IC card: touch the reader on the fare box.
  5. Changing trams with cash: tell the crew your destination, pay the fare to it and take the transfer ticket (乗換券); on the second tram put the numbered ticket and the transfer ticket into the fare box.
Wheelchair assistance

For wheelchair users the partial low-floor car 8101 and the ultra-low-floor 9600 series are convenient; they run regularly (check the low-floor timetable on the tram website). Contacting the operator in advance makes boarding smoother, but the crew help as far as possible even without notice. Disability certificate holders pay half fare. Tel. 0138-32-1730
