Night travel: sleeper train and night buses

Sunrise Seto and Sunrise Izumo sleeper

• JR West lists the Sunrise Seto and Sunrise Izumo under sleeper trains. The Sunrise Seto runs Tokyo to Takamatsu (Shikoku). [1]
• The Sunrise Izumo runs Tokyo to Izumo-shi (San'in). [1]
• The train is mostly private sleeping compartments. [2]
• Berths cost extra on top of the fare and express fee: a Single Deluxe room (A sleeper) is 13,980 yen per person; B-sleeper rooms cost less. [3]
• A two-person room needs two adult express and berth charges, even if you travel alone. [3]
• The shower needs a paid shower card from the machine on board. [3]
• With the JAPAN RAIL PASS you still pay the berth charge and the limited express fee for a sleeper. [4]
• Buy tickets for night trains in advance: ticket counters may not sell reserved tickets late at night or early in the morning. [5]

Night buses

• JR Bus Kanto runs overnight highway buses, for example the Dream Nagoya (Tokyo to Nagoya and Gifu). [6]
• JR Bus Kanto tickets go on sale at 10:00 one month and one day before travel. [7]
• On the Dream Nagoya (from 1 August 2026) even babies and pre-school children need a child ticket. [6]
• The JAPAN RAIL PASS does not cover JR highway buses. [4]
