Booking seats on JR Kyushu trains

Use JR Kyushu Net Reservation (QR ticketless) for limited expresses, D&S trains and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, and smartEX / Express Reservation for the Kyushu Shinkansen Hakata – Kagoshima-Chuo. Seats go on sale at 10:00 one month ahead; visitors can use JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation in English.

Which booking service

  • JR Kyushu Net Reservation covers limited expresses, D&S (sightseeing) trains and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen. [1]
  • For the Kyushu Shinkansen Hakata – Kagoshima-Chuo and the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen, JR Kyushu points you to the EX services (smartEX, Express Reservation). [1]
  • With Net Reservation choose 'QR ticket' and board with the QR code on your phone; no ticket pickup needed. [1]

When to book

  • Trains more than a month away are taken as advance requests from one week before sales open; the actual booking is made from 10:00 one month before travel and may fail if the train is full. [2]
  • Advance requests are paid by credit card only and cannot pick seats from the seat map. [2]

  • The English site books JR Kyushu and JR West trains, one-way or return. [3]
  • Bookings open at 10:00 one month before departure and close 6 minutes before departure. [3]
  • Booking hours are 05:30 to 23:00 JST; pay online by credit card. [3]
  • Collect the tickets at a JR Kyushu ticket office or ticket machine; they cannot be collected at JR Hokkaido, JR East, JR Central or JR Shikoku stations. [4]
  • Bring the credit card you paid with, the reservation number and your 4-digit identification number; without the card you cannot collect the tickets. [4]
  • At Hakata and Kokura, JR Kyushu and JR West have separate offices and machines; use the JR Kyushu ones. [4]

On the platform

  • Reserved cars are marked 指定席 or RESERVED; your ticket shows car and seat number. [5]
  • Non-reserved cars are marked 自由席 or NON RESERVED; sit in any free seat. [5]
  • JR Kyushu Rail Pass holders cannot book Relay Kamome or the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen Kamome online; reserve at a JR station ticket counter after arrival, or ride in non-reserved seats with the pass alone. [5]
