Booking seats on JR Hokkaido limited expresses and the Hokkaido Shinkansen

All JR Hokkaido limited expresses are reserved-seat only. Book on Eki-net (JR East's service) or, as a visitor, on JR-EAST Train Reservation from 10:00 one month before travel, then collect tickets at a JR Hokkaido ticket machine or office.

All seats reserved

  • Every limited express within Hokkaido (Hokuto, Suzuran, Ozora, Tokachi, Kamui, Lilac, Soya, Sarobetsu, Okhotsk) has reserved seats only. [1]
  • There is no on-board catering on limited expresses or on the Hokkaido Shinkansen section; buy food and drink before boarding. [2]

Booking on Eki-net

  • JR Hokkaido trains are booked on Eki-net, JR East's online service; membership is free. [1]
  • Requests are accepted from one month and one week ahead, but seats are only booked from 10:00 one month before travel and may be full. [1]
  • Eki-net-only discount tickets (特急トクだ値) are limited by train and number of seats, and their price changes with expected demand and how early you book. [1]
  • If you miss the booked train you must buy a new limited express ticket for a later train that day. [1]
  • Collect paper tickets at JR Hokkaido reserved-seat ticket machines or ticket offices (some ticket types cannot be collected in Hokkaido). [3]

Visitors: JR-EAST Train Reservation

  • Visitors can buy Hokkaido rail passes on JR-EAST Train Reservation from 10:00 JST one month before the pass starts. [4]
  • With a pass bought there, reserve seats from 10:00 JST one month ahead until 6 minutes before departure. [4]
  • With a pass exchange order from a travel agency, reserve by 23:50 JST two days before travel and collect the tickets by 21:00 the day before. [4]
  • You can book the Hokkaido Shinkansen and limited expresses; temporary trains, sightseeing trains and local trains cannot be reserved there. [4]
  • Reserved-seat e-tickets are also sold for the Airport rapid trains to New Chitose Airport (fare ticket or IC card needed separately). [4]
  • Collect tickets before boarding and allow extra time, as stations can be crowded. [4]
