Large luggage on JR East and JR Hokkaido Shinkansen and limited express trains

No booking for luggage

• On the Tohoku, Hokkaido, Akita, Yamagata, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen you do not book luggage space. Use any free space. [1]
• You cannot reserve a luggage space on its own, and there are no special seats for large bags on these lines. [1]
• All these Shinkansen have luggage spaces; only some limited express trains do. [1]
• The Narita Express (N'EX) has large luggage compartments with a dial lock. [1]
• Going on to the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu or Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen? Different rules apply there (bags over 160 cm need a booked seat). [1]

Where to put your bag

• If the luggage space is full, keep the bag at your feet. In Gran Class, ask the attendant. [1]
• In the ski season (winter) the luggage spaces can run out. [1]
• Do not put heavy or unstable bags on the overhead rack; use the floor or a luggage space. [1]
• Do not block the aisle or the doors with your bags. [1]
• Strollers can be taken on board without folding them. [1]
• Bicycles must be dismantled or folded and fully packed in a bike bag. [1]

Size limits

• Up to 2 bags free, each up to 250 cm (length + width + height), 2 m long and 30 kg. Larger bags cannot be taken on board. [2]
• On very crowded trains staff may refuse large luggage. [1]
