Nagoya Station: lines, transfers, lockers and step-free routes

Lines and layout

• JR Central serves the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Tokaido, Chuo and Kansai lines here. [1]
• Connecting railways: Meitetsu, Kintetsu, the city subway (Nagoya City Transportation Bureau) and the Aonami Line (Nagoya Rinkai Rapid Transit). [1]
• On the JR floor plan the Shinkansen platforms 14–17 are along the Taiko-dori (west) exit; JR local platforms 1–13 lie towards the Sakura-dori (east) exit. The Central Concourse (中央コンコース) runs between the two exits, with Shinkansen transfer gates (新幹線北乗換口, 新幹線南乗換口) from the local-line area. [2, map]
• On the same plan, the way to Meitetsu and Kintetsu (名鉄・近鉄へ) is at the Sakura-dori / Hirokoji end, the Higashiyama and Sakura-dori subway entrances are by the Sakura-dori exit and in the Central Concourse, and the Aonami Line (あおなみ線) is at the south end by the Taiko-dori south exit. [2, map]
• Meitetsu Nagoya has only four platform faces for many destinations: platform 1 for Gifu, Tsushima and Inuyama, platform 4 for Toyohashi, Chubu Airport and other southbound lines, and platforms 2 and 3 for the reserved 'special cars' (μ-ticket) only. Check the destination on the board. [3]

Transfers (times from the Kintetsu platform)

• Kintetsu gives standard walking times from the middle of its platform to the nearest gate of each other line. [4]
• Kintetsu to JR local lines: about 5 minutes via the JR transfer gate (7 via the underground gate). [4]
• Kintetsu to the JR Shinkansen gates: about 9 minutes (12 via the underground gate). [4]
• Kintetsu to Meitetsu: about 5 minutes via the Meitetsu transfer gate. [4]
• Kintetsu to the subway: about 8 minutes to the Higashiyama Line and 10 to the Sakura-dori Line; to the Aonami Line about 17 minutes (all via the underground gate, with step-free routes). [4]

Tickets, rail passes and seat reservations

• JR ticket counters (きっぷうりば) are open 05:30–23:00. [1]
• Japan Rail Pass: exchange or collect it at the JR Information office (10:00–19:00, credit card only), the ticket counters (05:30–23:00), or JR Tokai Tours Nagoya and Nagoya Station Hirokoji branches. [5]
• Meitetsu Nagoya Service Center is in the Meitetsu station: weekdays 10:00–19:00, weekends and holidays 09:00–18:00. [3]

Coin lockers and tourist information

• JR Central's station page links a coin locker list with 12 locker sites, e.g. the bus terminal, Central Concourse, Hirokoji exit, Taiko-dori exit and Gate Tower B1. All take IC money or cash; extra-large lockers are at the bus terminal south, the Hirokoji exit and Gate Tower B1. [6]
• Nagoya Station Tourist Information is inside JR Nagoya Station and also helps with transport questions. [7]
• It is open 08:30–19:00 (08:30–17:00 on 2–3 January). [7]
• A second tourist information office opened on 12 September 2026 in the west station plaza, just outside the Shinkansen (Taiko-dori) exit; open 09:00–17:00. [8]

Step-free routes and toilets

• All JR platforms have elevators; the Shinkansen platforms 14–17 also have up and down escalators, but the Kansai Line platforms 12–13 have no escalators. [9]
• JR has accessible toilets (wheelchair, baby seat, ostomate) inside the local-line gates, inside the Shinkansen gates and outside the gates. [9]
• Wheelchair users on Meitetsu should call the boarding-assistance line (0570-55-0155) or ask station staff; allow plenty of time. [3]
