Travel without your suitcase: delivery and lockers

Hands-Free Travel counters

• Look for counters with the "Hands-Free Travel" logo. Drop off your bags, fill in the delivery form and go. [1]
• The government publishes the list of logo counters as PDF and CSV, in Japanese and English. [1]
• The counter list was last updated on 20 August 2026. [2]
• Typical limits: up to 160 cm (length + width + height), 25 to 30 kg, and contents worth under 300,000 yen. [1]
• Valuables, fragile items, fresh food, liquids and dangerous goods are not accepted. [1]

Same-day delivery

• Narita, Haneda and Kansai airports have counters that deliver your bags to your hotel. [1]
• Most major hotels can send your bags on to the next hotel; ask at the front desk. [1]
• Yamato Transport delivers from an airport or station to your hotel the same day, in limited areas. No booking needed; pay at the counter. [3]
• Yamato example fees for a 160-size bag: Haneda Airport to Tokyo's 23 wards 5,780 yen; Kyoto Station to Kyoto city 3,470 yen. [3]
• Delivery to an airport costs extra (Airport Express Delivery Fee). [3]
• Yamato also offers baggage storage at its Hands-Free Travel counters. [4]
• Tokaido Shinkansen (JR Central): LUGGAGE EXPRESS takes your bag from a hotel or station to your next hotel the same day. [5]
• LUGGAGE EXPRESS is a paid service that must be booked; it takes bags up to 200 cm (length + width + height). [5]
• Kyushu Shinkansen: "Hayabin QUICK" carries bags station to station the same day between Hakata and Kumamoto or Kagoshima-Chuo. No booking; hand it in at the station counter. [6]
• Hayabin QUICK: a suitcase of 140 to 160 cm costs 2,000 yen; pay in cash or by credit card. [7]
• After the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake Hayabin was suspended; it accepts bags on the whole Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo route again from 18 September 2026. [8]

Coin lockers

• Most stations and tourist sites have coin lockers. JNTO says to expect 300 to 600 yen depending on size. [1]
• Many lockers take IC transit cards (Suica, PASMO, ICOCA…). [1]
• At busy stations lockers fill up quickly. [1]
• JR East typical prices: SS 300 yen, S 500 yen, M 700 to 800 yen, L 900 to 1,000 yen (they vary by place and locker type). [9]
• Tokyo Station alone has more than 100 locker sites. [9]
• JR East "Multi eCube" lockers can be booked online up to a month ahead, and show free lockers in real time. [9]
• Multi eCube can also deliver bags from the locker to your hotel the same day, or send them home. [9]
