No booking needed. You can board without a reservation whenever there is space. 2nd-class seats can also be booked online (bookings open 2 months ahead, same day). Bicycles and motorbikes cannot be reserved: first come, first served at the terminal.

- Ticket counters in the Wakkanai and Oshidomari ferry terminals, open from about 1 hour before departure; finish check-in 30–40 min before departure for 2nd class
- Ticket machines for 2nd-class adult and child tickets: 3 at Wakkanai Ferry Terminal, 1 at Oshidomari
- Online booking on the Heart Land Ferry website
Paying: Cash or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners); QR-code payments too. The ticket machines take cash or IC-chip credit cards with a PIN.

- Typhoons and low-pressure systems (wave height, wind) can cancel sailings, sometimes at short notice; the operator does not call you if a sailing is cancelled.
- Primary-school children pay half fare; up to two children under school age travel free with each adult (not in reserved seats).
- Some boats from Wakkanai to Rebun call at Oshidomari, so Oshidomari also has a boat on to Kafuka (Rebun Island).
